Starting your first home organic garden in Mauritius is one of the most rewarding things you can do. Here is everything you need to get started, step by step.
Step 1: Choose Your Space
You do not need a big garden. You can grow in:
- A small backyard plot
- Containers and pots on a balcony or terrace
- Raised beds
For beginners, start small — 4–6 containers or a 2m × 1m raised bed is enough to learn and produce meaningful results.
Step 2: Choose What to Grow
Start with easy crops suited to Mauritius conditions:
- Herbs: basil, coriander, chives, mint
- Vegetables: tomatoes, chilli, brinjal, lettuce, spring onion
- Climbing plants: passion fruit (if you have a trellis)
Step 3: Prepare Your Growing Medium
For containers and raised beds, use:
- Cocopeat (40%) — for water retention and aeration
- Compost (40%) — for nutrients and microbial life
- Biochar (10%) — for long-term soil health
- Garden soil or topsoil (10%) — to anchor roots
Avoid raw soil from the ground alone — it can be compacted, nutrient-poor, and full of weed seeds.
Step 4: Start Your Seeds
- Fill seedling trays with cocopeat or potting mix.
- Sow seeds at the depth shown on the packet (usually 2× the seed diameter).
- Water gently — keep moist but not waterlogged.
- Place in a warm, bright spot out of direct midday sun.
- Most vegetable seeds germinate in 3–7 days.
Step 5: Transplant
When seedlings have 2–4 true leaves and are 5–10cm tall, they are ready to transplant into their final containers or beds.
Step 6: Watering
Water in the morning. Allow the top layer of growing medium to dry slightly between waterings — overwatering is the most common mistake.
Step 7: Pest Management
Prevention first:
- Healthy soil grows stronger, more pest-resistant plants.
- Remove damaged or diseased leaves promptly.
- Use neem oil spray every 2 weeks as prevention.
