Neem oil is one of the most trusted organic pest-control solutions used by growers worldwide โ and it works exceptionally well in Mauritius conditions.
What is Neem Oil?
Neem oil is extracted from the seeds of the neem tree (*Azadirachta indica*). It contains a natural compound called azadirachtin, which disrupts the feeding, development, and reproduction of a wide range of insects and fungal pathogens.
What Pests Does Neem Oil Control?
- Aphids
- Whiteflies
- Spider mites
- Mealybugs
- Fungus gnats
- Caterpillars (early stages)
- Powdery mildew and other fungal diseases
How to Mix Neem Oil Spray
Basic mix (per litre of water):
- 5ml pure neem oil
- 2ml liquid soap or emulsifier (to help mix oil and water)
- 1 litre of warm water
Mix the soap and oil first, then slowly add water while stirring continuously. Use immediately โ neem oil emulsion breaks down after a few hours.
How to Apply
- Apply in the early morning or late afternoon โ never in strong midday sun, as it can burn leaves.
- Spray on both sides of leaves, especially the underside where pests hide.
- Cover all plant surfaces thoroughly.
- Repeat every 7โ10 days for active infestations, every 14 days for prevention.
Important Notes
- Neem oil is safe for humans, pets, and beneficial insects like bees when used correctly and allowed to dry before bees visit.
- Apply in the evening to minimise contact with pollinators.
- Store neem oil in a cool, dark place. Solidification in cool temperatures is normal โ gently warm to liquefy.
- Always test a small leaf area first before spraying the entire plant.
EliteMC Tip for Mauritius
In the humid Mauritius climate, fungal diseases like powdery mildew can spread quickly. A regular preventive neem oil spray every two weeks helps keep your plants clean without chemicals.
