Passion fruit is one of the most rewarding fruits to grow in Mauritius. It is fast-growing, productive, and thrives in our climate. Here is how to grow it organically.
Climate Suitability
Mauritius is ideal for passion fruit. It prefers:
- Warm temperatures (20–30°C) — perfect for Mauritius
- Good sunlight — minimum 6 hours per day
- Well-drained soil — waterlogging will kill the plant
Planting
Start from seedlings for faster results. Plant in the ground or in large containers (minimum 20 litres).
Prepare your planting hole with a mix of compost, biochar, and cocopeat for excellent root establishment.
Training
Passion fruit is a vigorous climber. Install a trellis or wire fence before planting. Train the main stem upward and allow lateral branches to spread horizontally.
Watering
Water regularly during establishment (first 4–6 weeks), then reduce. Mature plants are fairly drought-tolerant but fruit production is improved with consistent watering.
Organic Fertilising
Apply vermicompost or compost around the base of the plant monthly. Avoid high-nitrogen synthetic fertilisers — they promote leaf growth at the expense of flowers and fruit.
Pest and Disease Management
- Apply neem oil spray every 2 weeks to prevent aphids and fungal diseases.
- Remove damaged or yellow leaves promptly.
- Ensure good airflow by not overcrowding the trellis.
Harvesting
Passion fruit is ready when it drops from the vine or when the skin begins to wrinkle slightly. This usually takes 6–9 months from transplanting.
