How to Use Cocopeat as a Growing Medium

Cocopeat is versatile, sustainable, and perfect for seedlings and container gardening. Learn the correct way to use and hydrate cocopeat.

🪵

Cocopeat (also called coir) is made from coconut husk fibres — a sustainable by-product of coconut processing. It is one of the most versatile and eco-friendly growing media available.

Why Use Cocopeat?

  • Excellent water retention (holds 8–9× its weight in water)
  • Good aeration — prevents root compaction
  • Naturally resistant to mould and fungus
  • pH neutral (5.5–6.5) — suitable for most plants
  • Sustainable and renewable

How to Hydrate a Cocopeat Block

A 5kg compressed cocopeat block expands to approximately 60 litres when fully hydrated.

  1. Place the block in a large container or wheelbarrow.
  2. Add 10–15 litres of warm water slowly.
  3. Allow the block to absorb water for 10–15 minutes.
  4. Break apart any remaining chunks by hand.
  5. Add more water if the mix still feels dry.

How to Use Cocopeat

For seedling trays:

Use 100% cocopeat for germination. It is light, clean, and easy for seedling roots to penetrate.

For container growing:

Mix with compost and biochar:

  • 50% cocopeat
  • 40% compost
  • 10% biochar

For raised beds:

Add 20–30% cocopeat to improve water retention and soil structure.

Important Note

Pure cocopeat contains almost no nutrients. Always combine with compost or organic fertiliser when growing past the seedling stage.
