Chickens are the most useful animal a grower can keep. Eggs are only the headline: a small flock also eats pests, clears beds, turns compost and manufactures fertiliser daily. The trick is keeping them moving — which is exactly the EliteMC farm model.
Why mobile, not caged
A permanent chicken run becomes bare, parasite-loaded mud within months. A mobile system — a light coop or "tractor" moved across the land — gives the birds fresh forage daily, spreads their manure evenly (fertilising instead of polluting), and breaks the parasite cycle by never staying long. The birds are healthier, the eggs richer, and the land improves behind them.
A backyard flock in Mauritius
- Three to five hens supply a family with eggs; no rooster needed for laying.
- Housing: shade and dry shelter are the priorities in our climate — heat stresses hens far more than our mild winter. A cyclone-proof night coop is non-negotiable: anchor it like you mean it.
- Water always, in shade; a laying hen drinks half a litre a day, more in summer.
- Feed: layers need proper feed for protein and calcium, supplemented generously with garden surplus, kitchen scraps and whatever they forage. Crushed eggshell or shell grit keeps shells hard.
- Local breeds and crosses handle heat and pests better than imported hybrids; they lay a little less and survive a lot more.
Chickens in the garden — with a fence
Chickens and vegetable beds are allies only when separated by mesh. Let them into a finished bed for a week and they will clear pests, weed seeds and slug eggs while manuring it. Let them into a growing bed for an hour and they will destroy it. Timed access is the whole art.
The circular logic
Garden waste feeds the hens, hens feed the compost, compost feeds the soil, soil feeds the garden. One small flock closes the household nutrient loop — the same loop the farm closes at scale with hundreds of birds behind the cattle rotation.
