A handful of healthy soil holds more living organisms than there are people on Earth. Bacteria, fungi, protozoa, nematodes, worms — together they form the soil food web, and understanding it is the single most useful idea in organic growing.
The factory under your feet
Plants cannot eat compost, manure or dead leaves directly. Soil organisms do the eating for them. Bacteria and fungi break down organic matter and lock nutrients into their own bodies. Then bigger organisms — protozoa and nematodes — eat the bacteria and fungi, and release the surplus nutrients right next to plant roots, in exactly the form roots can absorb. This nutrient cycling happens on the plant's schedule: roots leak sugars to attract the microbes they need, when they need them.
Why chemicals break the system
Synthetic fertilisers feed the plant directly — and bypass the food web. The workforce goes hungry and shrinks. With fewer microbes, the soil compacts, holds less water, and diseases take over the empty space. The grower then needs more fertiliser and more pesticide every season. That is the chemical treadmill, and it is why the EliteMC farm is built soil-first instead.
What this means in your garden
- Never leave soil bare. Sun and heavy Mauritian rain kill surface life — mulch is the roof over the workforce's head.
- Feed the workers, not just the plants: compost, mulch, and plant roots kept living in the ground.
- Dig as little as possible. Every deep dig tears up the fungal networks that took months to build.
- Skip the "just this once" chemical spray — soil life recovers slowly, pests recover fast.
